Kings Ash celebrates opening of new outdoor provision following more than £40,000 investment

April 8, 2026 02:10pm

Kings Ash Academy is delighted to officially opened its new outdoor provision following a £40,000 investment designed to enhance support for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).

This new development was unveiled at a special opening event attended by pupils, families, staff and MP Caroline Voaden.

It includes a multi‑sensory play and communication space and a dedicated outdoor ‘Community Café’ area.

The space forms part of the school’s commitment to the Torbay Locality Model, ensuring that ordinarily available provision meets the needs of every child. A space designed for inclusion, connection and early support.

The new Community Café area provides a welcoming space where families can meet staff informally, strengthen relationships and access early help in a relaxed setting.

The school, a member of Thinking Schools Academy Trust, reports the area has opened opportunities for earlier identification of support needed with speech, language and communication needs, has improved parental engagement and stronger home–school collaboration.

Alongside this, pupils are now enjoying a vibrant outdoor multi-sensory zone created to develop communication skills, emotional literacy and self-regulation.

Speaking at the opening, headteacher Rob Fitzsimmons says: “This investment has completely transformed our outdoor space into an inclusive, communication‑rich environment where every child has the opportunity to thrive.

“What we’ve created thanks to the support of Torbay Council is far more than a play area, it’s a space that builds confidence, connection and communication for all of our learners.”

“Today’s opening is not just a celebration of new equipment. It marks a renewed partnership with our families and our community, all of us working together to ensure every child feels visible, valued and fully supported.

“This is a proud moment for our school and a meaningful step forward for our pupils. Thank you to our school staff, facilities team and Thinking Schools Academy Trust for their part in bringing this vision to life.”

The new outdoor facilities are now fully open and will benefit current pupils, families and the wider school community for years to come.
